Typhoon in Hong Kong?

I’ll be off to Japan via Hong Kong this Friday! Although a number of things have happened that may impact my trip plans.

Apparently there is a typhoon that will be arriving in Hong Kong roughly around the same day I will be landing there to transfer to my plane to Japan. I am hoping the flight isn’t affected! So far looking at the status, 4 flights have already been cancelled. Yikes! A cancelled flight would really screw things up for me.

Update: Seems the typhoon will probably head away from Hong Kong, so I should be fine. The ones that were cancelled was in Philippines where the typhoon hit badly.

iPod touch low battery

Just as I am about to go to Japan, I’ve started to notice that my iPod Touch 4th gen which I found out was purchased in 2011 has dying batteries which can’t hold much charge anymore. I did a bit of a search around and the local repair shop in the city can do a repair for $99 which they can do in 1 hour, but apparently it is quite risky. On the other hand, I took the iPod to the Apple store in the city and was told that they could replace it for $95.

Bought Diablo 3 for PC

Bought Diablo 3 pc at EB games for $36.

I bought the PS3 version already and quite enjoyed that, but since one of my friends bought the PC version and I found that it was actually quite good on PC, I’ve decided to also get a copy.

I did initially read a lot of negative media about the game, but it seems that most of those negative aspects have been fixed a while back, so I am happy to be able to enjoy the game for such a cheap price.

I did play a quick game with one of my friends and it was quite enjoyable. I hope to play it a bit more after I come back from my upcoming Japan trip.

DIY tube amplifiers

Lately I have been reading up on understanding how the headphone amplifiers I built work and trying to understand how tubes work too. I am quite surprised that the designs are really quite simple and quite similar.

I also noticed that with the tube amplifiers that I have, they seems to be very noisy, even with my linear power supply that I built.
However, when I tried powering it from a SLA lead acid battery, then it played without any noise at all and the music that was masked with the noise actually sounded very good.

Finished my headphone tube amplifier!

I finished wiring the tube amp kit and fixed the issue I found with forgetting to wire the volume control pot into the inputs. I put in the tube and did some initial tests with the opamp removed from it’s socket. I checked the opamp datasheet and verified the power pins and made sure the pins had the right voltage on it before powering it on with the opamp in it. I also verified that the output from the tube was also within the correct voltage.

Tube amp opened

From the tests, it looked like the amp was working correctly.

Wakamatsu headphone tube amplifier

I have been building a headphone tube amplifier that I bought from Wakamatsu at Akihabara last year.
The instructions had a couple of mistakes and the instructions weren’t that great for the wiring. The sample cutout distances for putting the earphone jacks and volume control pot was also incorrect as using the provided measurements meant the parts wouldn’t fit on the face of the casing. The photographs also showed a kit with the capacitor wired the wrong way around which I checked several times and asked other electronics friends to verify that it was wrong.

Lesmurdie Falls hike

Walked around Lesmurdie Falls with my friend as practise for climbing Mt Fuji at the end of the month. It was a beautiful sunny day and made for a nice day for a hike.

Climbed up some steep tracks at Lesmurdie falls. There were a lot of nice views, but I forgot to bring my camera. Instead I took some photos using my iPad. Read the rest of this entry »

Bought some Weiss Schwarz and Level Neo cards

Received my cards I ordered! Angel Beats, Love Live Weiss Schwarz cards and some Level Neo cards.

I was quite lucky with the card purchase as I managed to get a signed card and 3 triple rare cards which looks quite nice.
I also got some atari points in the Level Neo cards.

Japan trip preparation

Been preparing for a trip to Japan lately. Lots of last minute bookings for hotels for sightseeing. Looking forward to going to Japan again!
I’ll be doing some anime location siteseeing, climbing Mt Fuji with friends, going to some concerts (LiSA, angela and Lantis Festival), and some anime events (Wonder Festival)

After looking at the preview of Glasslip, I made last minute changes to my trip so that I’ll be going to Mikuni to the anime location.
I booked a glass blowing session at the Watari glass studio shown in the anime preview.

I have also been experimenting with using twitter and twilog RSS feeds with a wordpress plugin to transform my daily tweets to actual draft posts so I can blog more easily.
This should help me blog more often and also help me cover my Japan trip on my blog much quicker. I haven’t really made much progress in documenting my previous Japan trips on my blog, so hopefully this will help me do that easier this time.
